Smoking Policy
Smoking anywhere in OIS is prohibited. If a student is caught smoking, they will be obliged to enter an intervention programme as follows:
Student caught the first time:
- Meeting with the Student Counsellor (Disciplinary Discussion). Student contacts parents by telephone.
- Student is given one hour of detention to reflect on the incident. Detention note sent home and returned signed by parents.
- Student is informed of consequences if caught again for smoking during school time.
Student caught the second time:
- Student is obliged to attend sessions on five (5) consecutive Fridays.
- Student is provided with information about the hazards of smoking and during these sessions will write a written assignment on smoking.
The sessions have the following content:
- Addiction
- Self-knowledge, life management
- Health consequences
- Smoking and money
- Quitting smoking
If smoking continues:
- If student continues to smoke in spite of the sessions and the assignment, he/she student will be invited with his/her parents to discuss the issue with the school's Student Welfare Team.
- School will inform the Police.
- Consequences are the same as in other disruptive cases. The Principal decides on appropriate consequences, e.g. a written warning.
