About the MYP
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is specially designed for the unique needs of students aged 10 to 16 (grades 5 - 9) at a time when they need to develop good learning habits, self-confidence and a thorough understanding of their academic subjects. This student-centered educational approach both embraces and transcends traditional school subjects by helping students see the connections between the academic disciplines.
The three Fundamental Concepts described below underpin the Middle Years Programme:
Holistic Learning
- helps recognize the relationships between school subjects and the world outside;
- helps combine relevant knowledge and experience;
- solving authentic problems with critical thinking.
Communication
- learning other languages helps learning about different cultures;
- listening skills;
- a thorough command of one's own language enables effective expression of ideas, attitudes and feelings;
- supports inquiry and understanding, reflection and expression.
Intercultural Awareness
- fosters tolerance and respect, and leads to empathy and understanding;
- develops students' attitudes, knowledge and skills of how to learn about their own and others' social and national cultures.
